    Default Line Trainer

This is perhaps for the professionals in the group but anyone can feel free to answer of course if they have the answer.

It's a long way away but after youve got your command and have been flying as a captain for many years, how do you progress to becoming a line trainer?

Do you need to have an instructors rating or is it something a company trains you and qualifies you for internally? Ive always wondered and I feel that although it's miles away it's something I would love to eventually do.

    Cheers

I don't have great knowledge on this however I was talking to a captain the other day and he mentioned that they have trained FOs to be 'Training FOs' TRI's and run sim sessions. Great experience for the FO that will look great on the CV and company wise, cheaper training costs. I do remember them advertising a while back but for FOs based in the biggest base.

I also know that current rules state that you can become a training captain after 1500 hrs in command, whether that is a TRE or TRI, I am not sure. However new EASA rules are set to change this.

So it sounds like you dont need to get an instructors rating? Perhaps that its more internal training approved by the CAA? The FO thing sounds good, although Im looking for a nice lengthy career flying in normal job roles before eventually dipping my hand in some training when I begin turning into a boring moaning captain

Not sure where 'McGoo' went but I bet he could answer this question straight away. Thanks Ad

From what I am aware the company pays for the course, (perhaps company differences). Simple application from captains when a vacancy is available. Then suitable candidate is selected and does the course. Echoing what Ads has said, for example BA you can be a trainer as an F.O. Extra remuneration around 15-20K extra.

Ive heard there is a new line trainer that goes by the name of 'Gas' at Easyjet, perhaps ask him.....

This F/O training is new to me. I don't see how this would work though, seeing as you are less experienced than training captains and who exactly would you be training? Other F/O's?

Anyway sounds like its all internal stuff done by the company which is good news, means you wont have to privately fund a training course for yourself

From what I could pick up. They will run LOE sessions and train capts and FO's. I'm guessing it required quite a strict criteria when recruiting. But adding the 10% onto a FOs wage is much cheaper than the same on a captains wage!

I wonder what captains would make of it- being trained by a first officer!

At the end of the day you are just operating to a required standard. Yes your experience would be less but that doesn't mean you couldn't run a few sim scenarios. You could have been on the airbus for 5 years and a captain could have potentially only been on the airbus for a few months after moving across from the Boeing.
